Who We Are
Washington students have big dreams for their futures, and our state is home to a diverse economy with a broad range of anchor industries.
But there’s a catch.
A majority of these jobs will require a post-high school credential, such as a degree, apprenticeship, or certificate in a specific field such as medicine, technology, or manufacturing. Today, only 40 percent of our high school students are projected to complete such a credential by the time they’re 26 — that’s a 3 percentage point drop from two years ago. And the pandemic has exacerbated the existing crisis: compared to fall 2019, fall 2023 enrollment in WA declined by more than 50,000 students.
That means we have work to do.
The College Promise Coalition is an unprecedented partnership that brings together dozens of organizations and individuals, including Washington’s public and private four- and two-year colleges and universities; students, families, faculty, alumni, education advocates, and leaders in business and labor. We work together to expand opportunities for education and training beyond high school so students can succeed regardless of their circumstances.
With more than 740,000 job openings coming to Washington state in the next five years, our students can pursue the career pathways of their choice.
But there’s a catch.
A majority of these jobs will require a post-high school credential of some kind, such as a degree, apprenticeship, or certificate in a specific field such as medicine, technology or manufacturing. Today, only 40 percent of our high school students go on to complete such a credential by the time they’re 26.
That means we have work to do.
